"we just want to connect them to the Maker...."
it's been 16 years since wahba first picked up a guitar. since then, the calling of this egyptian-american worship artist has become more and more clear: to write and lead worship songs that engage people with their Creator. disarming and multi-sensory, disarming and multi-sensory, worship services with this 2006 Momentum Awards "Worship Artist of the Year" nominee have helped make that connection.
frequently incorporating congregational scripture readings, communion, and "multiple-choice-worship" (where the congregation gets to choose what is sung), worship experiences with wahba have been compared to the likes of David Crowder and Chris Tomlin.
"we stay pretty busy...."
supporting his solo releases, LIVE @ GJ'S (2007), THE BEAUTIFUL EFFECT (2005) and PROSKYNEO (2004), wahba has played over 250 times in the past two years of his ministry. his congregation-audiences have ranged from youth & college-age to adult services. he and his band (currently Tim Ernst on drums and Jonathan Kingsley on bass guitar) have led worship with groups from multiple ethnic backgrounds, gathering an email list of over 500 fans. since early 2006, they have been invited to open for Natalie Grant, Leeland, Pillar, Kutless, By the Tree, Christafari and FFH.
"it's modern worship - that doesn't sound like U2"
drawing less from modern shoe-gazer-soft-rock or contemporary nu-metal heroics, wahba's edgy/raw music style is more like Led Zeppelin meets Stevie Wonder. funky, soulful and loud.
though currently seeking management and label representation, wahba has garnered much industry attention as an independent artist. THE BEAUTIFUL EFFECT reached the top ten on multiple indie charts in early 2006. wahba remained within the top 20 highest rated artists on Indieheaven.com for the majority of 2006. and recently, wahba had three songs simultaneously chart within the top ten Christian rock tracks on the Podsafe Network.
"go ahead - burn, download, share"
wahba insists that his music is not his own. that his songs are the creation of One greater than he. therefore, he is commonly heard telling his fans to burn and copy his CDs for all their friends. licensing all his songs under a creative commons copyright, wahba freely encourages burning, sharing and downloading of his music.
Eclectic, fresh, rootsy, funky, raw. These are some of the ways wahba’s songwriting has been described. As former guitarist for Reign Kings, Brandon Reid Allen, and Nathan Finfrock, Arizona-based wahba has played on the same bill with artists such as Live, Collective Soul, Blues Traveler, Eve 6, Telecast and Jonah33. wahba took 2nd place overall in the 2005 Crash Competition in Arizona. He and the band played at the Rage Music Festival (Pillar, Kutless) and have been invited to open for Natalie Grant (Curb Records) in March, 2006, supporting wahba's new album, THE BEAUTIFUL EFFECT. His critically-acclaimed solo debut, PROSKYNEO (2004), introduced wahba’s brand of soulful, funky-rock blended with modern worship. Songs from PROSKYNEO made top 10 charts on IndieHeaven and Christian Indie Radio. Since the release of PROSKYNEO, wahba and his band have regularly led worship across Arizona, fostering relationships with multiple college ministries and church congregations in the Phoenix area. wahba was ranked the #1 highest rated artist on Indieheaven.com in April, 2004. wahba worshipped and played at over 100 shows in 2005, including a 7-city tour of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Having led worship for the past 14 years at various churches, festivals, camps and retreats, this Egyptian-American blends soul, rock, gospel, hymns, and modern sounds. his worship style incorporates congregation-oriented, multi-sensory elements that engage individuals to participate in worship. wahba... progressive :: emergent :: worship ::
